Jess Pollard wins Vancouver's SNAG Arena Mural Battle
“I was asked to participate in a live mural battle, to promote a fantastic upcoming art market in October called ArtBreakers (think Comicon, but for illustrators!
I had two hours to paint my mural, while another artist did the same. The winner was determined by who the crowd cheered for loudest!
I was extremely nervous at first but after a few minutes I became immersed in painting. I chose primary colours because they're the ArtBreakers brand colours.
My mural is of a crying, cartoon dog painting a fierce, more realistic dog - a dream of what the silly dog wishes she could be.
While designing this mural, it was important to consider each element as a powerful, graphic block because I knew the mural would be viewed from a distance.
I had a wonderful time and I hope to return to SNAG as a guest artist again!”

The ArtBreakers Market is hosted and organized by the ArtBreakers Illustration Society – a non-profit group founded by four artist friends: Laura Bifano, Graeme McCormack, Tim Mack, and Tessa Riecken. ArtBreakers was created to provide illustrators and designers with an event and community that is their own. The ArtBreakers Market aims to showcase some of the best image-makers in Vancouver city and invites the public to meet some of the industry pros who don’t always go to the cons.

SNAG is a weekly live painting art raffle in Vancouver, BC. SNAGBREAKERS was held September 19, 2017 at The American. It was presented by The ArtBreakers Illustration Society and hosted by Nick Pound.
SNAG is being taken over! Some of our coolest and most talented friends have formed a supergroup like the Justice League or NKOTBSB, except instead of fighting villains or singing pop hits, they’re helping connect artless people with superstar imagemakers in our city. They’re working hard on a market featuring some of Vancouver’s Illustration and Design geniuses, but it’s still a month away, and who can wait?! Certainly not us, that’s why we’ve surrendered ourselves to the ARTBREAKERS crew. They’re usurping our event and giving us all a very exciting sneak preview of the talent on their roster.
We’ve also got our patented ARENA Art Battle wherein two artists have two hours to complete a large-scale piece that YOU, the audience will judge, sending one home in triumph and the other crumpled by emotional devastation that will take hours of shower time to overcome. Still not enough? We’ve also got a real LIFE DRAWING MODEL who will pose gracefully for you to try your hand at sketching them. No need for experience, or even drawing supplies, we’ve got enough to share.
