Juliana Vieira's illustration of Capilano U campus published for Back to School Special of Capilano Courier!

The Capilano Courier hires many of our students to do editorial illustration work. In August 2017, the art director of the Courier, Rachel Wada, gave 4th year student Juliana Vieira the opportunity to illustrate a map of the campus.

The illustration was for the Courier's Back to School Special issue (Vol. 50, Issue 1.  published on Sep 3, 2017) to accompany an article informing new students about some important locations on campus (the Writing Centre, Health Services, CSU Members Centre, etc.).

Juliana was given a list of the buildings and structures to be included, the dimensions of the spread, a map of the campus – and a lot of creative freedom! She used Google Maps to determine what the buildings looked like and made rough sketches to capture their characteristics, turning them into little characters that are typical of her fun and whimsical illustration style.

When she was happy with the layout, she sketched the map using Photoshop. Once approved by the art director, she completed the digital work. The Courier's production designer and IDEA School of Design alumnus, Cristian Fowlie, then completed the layout and typography.

The Courier office is located in the Maple Building, Room 122.
