Happy Lunar New Year of the Ox from IDEA School of Design at Capilano University!
Lunar New Year 2021 falls on Friday, February 12th, 2021, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 26th, 2021. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (February 11th–17th, 2021). Lunar New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2021 is the year of the Ox.

Process Brief by Imogen Pettyfer (IDEA Grad 2024)
For my illustration of the Ox, I was first conflicted to do it manually or digitally so I started off with both a piece of paper and an open document on Adobe Illustrator. It was after doing some more research on the fur of the Ox that I thought that having a free hand would make for a looser approach pushing me towards a paper and ink illustration. When I completed the drawing, it still seemed to look too flat in my opinion, which is when I decided to bring the picture into PhotoShop and lighten certain part which got lost in the sea of black and red fur. Even though I am not fully satisfied with the final result, it was still a nice experience to move away from my more favoured digital illustration and create something on paper.

Process Brief by Vylan Tran (IDEA Grad 2024)
I had many ideas for this illustration, so I spent a lot of time sketching out thumbnails with pencil and paper before I found one that I really liked. After having a solid idea, the rest of the process to make the art piece ran smoothly; it was also quite relaxing, might I add. In total, I think it took me a couple of hours to pencil out the idea onto a bigger piece of paper, ink it with different coloured India ink, then paint the final washes of watercolour (with all the drying time included).

In this digital piece, I wanted to feature the foods I commonly eat during Chinese New Year and capture the lively atmosphere of gathering with friends and family. While we can’t celebrate together in person this year, it seemed most fitting to feature the ox and his zodiac friends celebrating together over zoom! The lucky colors, red and gold, are used primarily in the background to emphasize the festive occasion.
