First year student, Anna Oh (IDEA Grad 2024) strongly believes her dreams will be in reach with a Bachelor of Design from IDEA School of Design

Meet first-year student, Anna Oh (IDEA Grad 2024)! Her self-portrait for IDES 133 - Visual Studio taught by Jay Bassan is shown above.

Read Anna’s story and check out some of her other work for a glimpse into first-year student life at IDEA School of Design at Capilano University.

Self Portrait by Anna Oh (IDEA Grad 2024)

The self-portrait was created for IDES 133 Visual Studio with instructor Jay Bassan. I wanted to show my nationality for this assignment. Thus, I wore traditional Korean clothing to represent my nationality. I included a soft and silky feel to it, because of the material of the clothing.

Self-portrait mood board by Anna Oh (IDEA Grad 2024)

“The Assignment” by Jay Bassan, Instructor

Create a mood board visualizing your Passion, Super Power, Values, Purpose and differentiation (students can use any medium for this).

“The Goal” by Jay Bassan, Instructor

To have students think clearly about how to imagine themselves as a brand and use their final self-portrait as an expression of that. This becomes one of the more interesting projects since it happens near the end of class and students are now comfortable enough with the camera.

I remind students that similar to sketching, where you decide where to put the pencil, pen, or mouse to compose your drawing, where do you put the camera to capture a moment or tell a story?

I get some interesting work.

Experience so far in first term at IDEA School of Design

The first term at IDEA School of Design was absolutely amazing. At some point, I was overloaded due to the amount of work I had to create but I learned a lot and improved my skills.

Featured Work

"The Wizard Frog" Logo Design

One of our assignments in DSGN 121 Design Fundamentals was to create a logo with a random noun and adjective. The two words I received were frog and entertainment. I decided to do a logo for an entertainment company that works with magicians, to promote them, manage their schedules, and help them become successful in their careers. The company name is "The Wizard Frog". I used black and yellow gauche paints for the final image.

Impressionist Painting inspired by Claude Monet

This painted was for IDES 131 Survey and Principles of Illustration I. It was painted with water-based oil. I was inspired by Claude Monet who is an impressionist artist. This painting was quite challenging but fun and interesting at the same time.

“Artemisia head drawing” Master’s Piece

This was done in graphite for IDES 131 Survey and Principles of Illustration I. The assignment was to make a copy of an Old Master's Drawing with an old gridding system. The Old Master's Drawing that I chose was Artemisia head drawing.

Why did you choose IDEA School of Design over other schools?

I chose IDEA School of Design because I strongly believe my dreams will be in reach if I attend this program. IDEA Bachelor of Design is known for producing excellent, brilliant students in the field of design.

Also, the instructors have a good reputation for offering students skills they use daily in their careers. Therefore, I wanted to be part of the IDEA Bachelor of Design program.

What advice would you give to those considering applying?

I would like to say, be confident in your work and do not worry if you do not know what specific industry you want to be in because you will know as you learn more!

"Breakthrough moment" at IDEA School of Design

I have not had breakthrough moments yet!

What’s one of your favourite songs or music videos?

One of my favorite music videos is "ICY" by ITZY. The use of colours is very interesting, and they used a lot of graphics that caught my eyes!
