In third year at IDEA School of Design at Capilano University, students choose their concentration. Concentrations include branding, illustration, UI/UX and non-concentration. Check out this blog story to find out why IDEA Grad 2023 chose the concentrations they did!
“As a self-proclaimed illustrator who loves storytelling and character design, I took a leap of faith and ultimately chose... Branding as my concentration!? When I thought back to what I wanted to achieve from my time in the IDEA program, it came down to the fact that I want to learn as much as possible. That included tackling my weakness in design and branding in the efforts to broaden my horizons for the industry.” — Natasha Lee
“I was torn between branding and UX/UI but I chose branding because I was most interested in packaging design.” — Yu-Hsuan (Megan) Lo
“I have been passionate about design long before I joined this program, so branding felt like the most natural choice. It's what I am most confident and comfortable in too. Pairing closely with the branding concentration with interactive, I hope it'll help give me additional tools and skills to design a strong and consistent brand.” — Imogen Pettyfer
“I chose the illustration concentration because I have always been passionate about painting and creating visually intricate pieces. I'm interested in telling stories through artwork and this concentration caters the most to that aspiration.” — Tara Asadi
“I chose the illustration concentration because i enjoy visualizing and creating stand alone pieces.” — Kelsea Vance
“I chose the interactive concentration because I want to create work that is not only visually appealing, but that is also functional and provides a meaningful and smooth experience for users. I find the whole UX design process, from problem framing to user research to wireframing and prototyping, to be engaging and fun. The process really pushes me to think and I am always learning so much from any research I do and any people I interview.” — Vylan Tran
“I went into open concentration because over the course of the last 2 years,I noticed that my interests and passions expanded far beyond illustration, which was the main reason I even went into this program. I wanted to learn everything at once and when the time came to pick our concentrations, I was as indecisive as ever.” — Valentina K
“I chose the open concentration because, though I'm interested mostly in branding, I wanted to improve my illustration skills and keep my options open for more learning opportunities.” — Jasmin Linton
“Interactive concentration, because I am interested in UI/UX.” — Yu (Lyren) Liu
