At Lunar New Year, it’s tradition for married people to give the gift of a bright, beautiful red envelope (known as 紅包, hóngbāo) to single friends and family.

“This set of illustrations depict the aspects of Lunar New Year celebrations from dress, to food, to decorations. The illustrations are originally sketched digitally before being transferred and painted with gouache onto the hong bao, or red envelopes,” writes Charlie Wongpisethkul.

“Chunjie” by Kayla Do (IDEA Grad 2027) was submitted as part of Kayla’s application to IDEA School of Design’s Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication

This illustration was inspired by a childhood book I read when I was younger. The author wrote stories inspired by Chinese culture and I wanted to capture that in this piece. The word "Chunjie" translates to the words Spring festival, it is an important day which celebrates the new year in Chinese culture. I implemented a lot of the lucky colour red which is a sign of great fortune and is usually used in traditional celebrations. Food is a big part of Chinese culture, it is how families bond and come together. Everyone shares big festive dishes of nostalgic food, reminiscent of easier days. In times of grief or sadness, food can help heal. I chose nostalgic Chinese dishes to represent the warmth and importance of being present at an important event like Chinese New Year.
