Happy Halloween & Inktober!

Every October, artists all over the world take on the Inktober drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month. We’re thrilled to feature some of the work from IDEA School of Design first-year students! Shown above: “Shriek” by Ethan Woronko (IDEA Grad 2024) (fountain pen and an ink wash).

Early Applications for IDEA School of Design Fall 2021 begin Friday, November 6, 2020 on SlideRoom. See Application Details for more and check out samples from first-year student application portfolios below. See Student Applications on our blog for more samples.

The Inktober prompt of the day was “teeth” so I felt something with its mouth wide open would be an interesting image. I also wanted to mix harsh contrast into the piece and just started sketching and eventually it turned into what it is now.

‘Pie Anyone’ by Celina ZhongThis is my interpretation of Halloween Pie, drawn with black micron pens. Ingredients include eyeballs, Tootsie Rolls, slime, spider webs, and candy corn. In my opinion, this recipe beats pumpkin pie.

Memento Mori was a piece I did with the title in mind before the idea for the piece came to mind. It was done with pointillism then imported into photoshop to make the 3D effect.

Memento mori is a Latin phrase that translates to “remember you must die.” A memento mori is something, historically a skull, that serves as a reminder of death and mortality.

‘Inktober Days 1-8’ (acrylic ink on watercolor paper) by Natasha Lee

To create these 4x4" illustrations, I followed Jake Parker's official 2020 Inktober list but put my spin on the prompts by adding social commentary into the pictures. From the double-edged effects of social media and technology to the injustices between social classes, I thoroughly enjoyed expressing my observations on current events and phenomenons through these pieces.

Chainsaw Man — Fanart for an awesome new manga that I discovered recently; Inktober Day 3: Bulky - Another Zelda drawing, featuring the Demon King Ganon; Inktober Day 8: Teeth - Playing with scale and composition in this drawing of two of my favourite Marvel characters and Inktober Day 10: Hope - the symbol of hope himself, Superman.

I did this drawing with the intent of drawing a scene, rather than simply drawing a figure. I established this scene to be a split of extreme lights and shadows, and I enjoyed the effect with the Spider-Sense.
