Mia Canderan (IDEA Grad 2023) wins 2020 ADCC Student Competition Finalist in Editorial & Book Design with 'Moby Dick'

Congratulations to Mia Canderan (IDEA Grad 2023) for winning 2020 ADCC Student Competition Finalist in Editorial and Book Design with ‘Moby Dick’ (shown above).

This project was for Survey and Principles of Design II. Instructor Vida Jurcic asked students to design a book cover for a classic novel. This was Mia’s execution.

This course examines graphic design and typography from the mid-20th century to the present day through an integration of history, theory, and practice. Students are introduced to modernist, post-modernist, and information age movements as an aesthetic and philosophical basis of modern graphic design and advertising. Applied projects, including the integration of concept with design principles, are integral to the course.

This is my book cover for Moby Dick by Herman Melville about a Sailor on a quest for revenge against the giant whale, Moby Dick. While maintaining a modern, fresh approach on the classic, the blue harpoons emerging from the type represent the attempted capturing of Moby Dick.
