Coralie Mayer (IDEA Grad 2022) wins Applied Arts 2020 Student Award with Jungian Psychology’s 'The Shadow' Illustration

Congratulations to Coralie Mayer (IDEA Grad 2022) for winning Applied Arts 2020 Student Award with 'The Shadow' illustration (shown above).

Jungian psychology’s treacherous shadow-self is revealed in this piece for the IDEA School of Design Bachelor of Design program’s 2020 Evil themed poster project.

In Jungian psychology, the shadow-self is an unconscious aspect of the personality in which repressed traits and experiences accumulate. The shadow-self exists just below the surface of our conscious ego, as our very own “evil personality”. Created for the IDEA program’s 2020 “evil” themed poster show, this illustration was inspired by the terrifying possibility of the shadow-self overtaking consciousness.

Thrilled to see so many entries in this issue! There is much design work featured, but don’t miss Coralie Mayer’s terrific “Evil” poster illustration, “The Shadow,” featured full-page on pp. 155 and 207.

Coralie accomplished a lot with economy and elegance. The level of craft and finish is impressive, the limited colour palette is unexpected, and it has the tension of opposing forces coexisting—which keeps the eye lingering.
