Jamie Kusack (IDEA Grad 2023) wins 3rd Place in CAPIC Rodeo 13 Student Illustration Contest with 'Apprehension: A Skeptic’s Prayer'

Congratulations to Jamie Kusack (IDEA Grad 2023) for winning 3rd place in the CAPIC Rodeo 13 student contest for Illustration with “Apprehension: A Skeptic’s Prayer” (shown above).

This illustration was for an assignment to represent an emotion, for which I decided to do an Apprehensive self-portrait. I wanted to tell a story with it, using colour contrast to represent internal conflict, and the incorrect hand position of the prayer to portray the unsure and fumbling nature of wanting to believe in something but not being able to give yourself over completely to it. The lighting is meant to be reminiscent of church candles, often lit for prayer in loss, as grief is a time when we are most desperate to find a meaning for why things happen to us. I haven’t use Photoshop to paint much, so this was a good opportunity to explore some new tools!

CAPIC (The Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators) holds an annual nationwide student contest in illustration and photography, titled Rodeo. This was the thirteenth year of the contest, but far from unlucky for Bachelor of Design students: First Place went to Megan Barry (IDEA Grad 2023), Second Place went to Janelle Momotani (IDEA Grad 2022), and Third Place went to Jamie Kusack (IDEA Grad 2023).

In addition, no fewer than seven IDEA students placed among the Top Ten: Alina Sandu (IDEA Grad 2022), Jason Low (IDEA Grad 2023), Janelle Momotani (as above), Joyce Chan (IDEA Grad 2023), Raha Namdari (IDEA Grad 2023), Alison Johnstone (IDEA Grad 2021), Aleksandar Jones (IDEA Grad 2023).

A clean sweep in the Illustration category!
