Shown above: “La Casa Gelato App” Figma design by Rayna Lai (IDEA Grad 2025) as part of her application to IDEA School of Design. Experience the app.
“La Casa is a well-known gelateria from Vancouver that I made a mobile concept app for, using Figma. Currently, there is no app existing for La Casa so I wanted to create a more convenient way to pay in-store or order ahead for pickup. The app will help with gelato flavour recommendations and discovery and tracks flavours customers have tasted and want to taste. In addition, with 238 flavours available on-site, the store could be difficult to navigate so I provided a way for customers to target specific flavours with a map for easy accessibility.”
“I attended both Portfolio Reviews to strengthen my portfolio, which also gave me the confidence to apply. As an applicant, I also reached out to students in the program for advice through Instagram.”
Camera Still Life, pencil on paper by Samantha Yeung (IDEA Grad 2025) as part of her application to IDEA School of Design
“I have always taken an interest in photography, and this film camera was a birthday present I got from a friend a couple of years ago. Despite her thoughtful gift, I never managed to figure out how to use the camera, so I thought I might as well make some use out of it in a still life. Nevertheless, I really love how all the photos captured on a film camera feel very in the moment, and will continue my attempt at using mine properly.”
“Nothing Lasts Forever, 2” by Theo as part of their application to IDEA School of Design
“Another typographic exploration on the phrase “nothing lasts forever”. I was inspired by the designer Tyler Spangler and the stacked, 3D effect on his typographic works. I was also inspired by neon signs and film, hence the colours used and the subtle film grain texture.”
“Connect with current IDEA students or IDEA grads.

“Alice in Wonderland” illustrated book cover design by Carmen Huang (IDEA Grad 2025) as part of her application to IDEA School of Design
““Alice in Wonderland” is a piece I produced using the skills and tools I gained during an online design course I took in the summer of 2020. We were assigned to establish a project to showcase our knowledge gained from the course, and due to my interest in illustration, I wanted to create a book cover. The illustration showcases Alice looking through the keyhole before she falls into the underground world known as Wonderland.”
“The purpose of your portfolio is to demonstrate your creative potential. We assess portfolios on drawing skill, design and creativity.”
“I found it helpful to attend the portfolio review session for feedback and to see examples of student work in the program.”
