Tiffany Zhong (IDEA Grad 2024) wins 1st Place in CAPIC Rodeo 14 Student Illustration Contest with 'Morning Melancholy' Self-Portrait

Congratulations to Tiffany Zhong (IDEA Grad 2024) for winning 1st place in the CAPIC Rodeo 14 student contest for Illustration with “Morning Melancholy” self-portrait (shown above)!

Many congratulations to Capilano University's IDEA School of Design students who continue to dominate the CAPIC student awards in illustration!

Check out this award-winning student illustration project!

This portrait was part one of two for an assignment to convey contrasting emotional interpretations for Jeff’s IDES 236 - Illustration II course.

The reference photo selected came from some test shots using a vintage Nikon lens on the digital Nikon body that we got for photography class in first year. The moody lighting and colouring from the photos was what inspired me to use them.

This portrait was done in one long multi-hour sitting on my iPad in Procreate—I just couldn’t put it down. I’ve always been fascinated in getting a traditional look using digital brushes and I feel like I really captured the exact gouache look I wanted to with this piece.
