Andy Chau (IDEA BDes Grad 2026) wins Top 10 in CAPIC Rodeo 16 Student Illustration Contest with 'Eating Away at My Own Time'

Congratulations to Andy Chau (IDEA BDes Grad 2026) for winning the Top 10 in the CAPIC Rodeo 16 student contest for Illustration with “Eating Away at My Own Time” (shown above).

Many congratulations to Capilano University's IDEA School of Design students who continue to dominate the CAPIC student awards in illustration!

Check out this award-winning student illustration project!

While making this piece for a stylistic exploration assignment in Shayne’s IDES 236 class, I was thinking about what feature of myself I could highlight in this self-portrait. Something that easily popped out was my unfortunate procrastination habit, which I decided to tackle in a more grotesque way.

I hold a mini version of me that is posed like the hands of a clock in my palm, half-eaten as I “eat away at my own time,” with the real meaning much more tame (wasting time scrolling on my phone) than the actual illustration. I followed a picture I quickly took of myself as a reference and took on a more realistic style with my favourite stippling brush in Procreate.
