Cassie Valenzuela Poon (IDEA BDes Grad 2025) wins the prestigious 2024 Graphis New Talent Award Honorable Mention for Orbit Centre Logo Design
Congratulations, Cass!
Cassie Valenzuela Poon (IDEA BDes Grad 2025), a student from the IDEA School of Design at Capilano University, has won an Honorable Mention at the prestigious Graphis New Talent Award 2024 for her Orbit Centre Logo Design. The Orbit Centre is a fictitious space center targeting families with young children, and Cassie’s design incorporates primary colours and a humanist, organic typeface to create a kid-friendly aesthetic. The logo's concept revolves around the word “orbit,” with letters visually orbiting the “O” to mimic the solar system. This design aims to make cosmic concepts more approachable for children through versatile and cohesive letter graphics.
Cassie is one of six IDEA School of Design students recognized at the 2024 Graphis New Talent Awards, which celebrate the innovative work of students and emerging creative leaders worldwide. Other winners include JJ Eng, Ethan Woronko, Anais Bayle, Tiffany Zhong, Natasha Lee, and Celina Zhong, who received honours in categories like typography, advertising, and branding.
The Graphis New Talent Award is an international platform that showcases groundbreaking ideas and fresh perspectives from students, promoting exceptional talent in design, advertising, photography, and illustration. Winners are featured in Graphis' hardcover Annuals and online archives, ensuring their work is preserved and celebrated for future reference.

Assignment
In our professional development class at the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication degree program at IDEA School of Design, Capilano University, we were tasked to do a project under the guidance of a mentor who helped us challenge and explore opportunities within our desired medium/discipline. For six weeks, we did check-ins with our mentors to bounce ideas off each other and learned new ways to approach a project. This project focused on branding the Orbit Centre, a fictitious space centre that I created.
Approach
We branched out on three different art directions to find the perfect aesthetic for the brand. However, because the Orbit Centre targets families with younger children, we landed on a direction that incorporates primary colors that you'd find in an elementary school classroom combined with a more humanist, organic type to make it feel kid-friendly. The logo's concept surrounds the entire name of the brand: orbit. The letters are meant to become these visual graphics that orbit around the 'O' of the logo, almost mimicking the look of our solar system.
Results
As the brand progresses with its merchandising and advertising, these letters will be used as visual graphics to bridge the comprehension gap of these great, unbeknownst, cosmic objects and translate them into familiar shapes that kids will find a bit more approachable. The letter graphics allow versatility and flexibility, and can be treated differently while still feeling cohesive.
