Happy Valentine's Day from IDEA School of Design at CapU!

The purpose of the ‘Modern Love’ project is to find a twist on the clichéd, gooey imagery around love, by combining it with an adjective that each student picks out of a hat. The project is taken to a polished pencil sketch only; the purpose is to generate ideas freely, and then assess and choose from a minimum of twelve thumbnail sketches. Students responded with curiosity, openness, and creativity, and rendered all kinds of love—alternately wholesome, dangerous, private, and recognizable—and several not between people at all.

“Really Good Friends” by Maya Mount

When given the prompt “unacknowledged love” I choose to explore the erasure of queer women and the spinster stereotype. Using sepia ink and gauche I illustrated two old women whose obvious love is ignored by the public.


“Scandalous Love” by Kaeli Parfitt

We were allowed to just submit a polished sketch since we were given only a week to work on this. We were all given the same prompt “love” but each drew a different prompt to pair with that word. This is “Scandalous Love,” which I decided to draw a couple making out over a coffin that is about to be buried during this funeral service.

“Grasping Love” by Anna Dinh

We were given an adjective on modern love as a prompt for our in-class graphite pencil drawing. The prompt I was given was "grasping love," and I depicted it through this illustration of a man getting rejected in a marriage proposal but relentlessly "grasping" on to the broken strings of their love.


“Let me grab my popcorn” by Anna Dinh

This is a 3-panel story that makes your thought process go... “Oh, she’s enjoying a movie... aahh it’s a spicy movie… ohhh it’s a free show..” The medium I used was watercolour on cold press paper.


“Puzzling Love” by Cadence Baker

This project had a one-day turnaround with the random prompt “puzzling love.” It’s done in sepia acrylic ink. I envisioned the puzzling relationship of a creator and their creation, showing the connection between the two characters while leaving the story and details of the relationship undefined, for the viewer to puzzle through themselves

About the course

IDES 132 Survey and Principles of Illustration II provides a grounding in the development of illustration as a profession through the integration of history, theory, and practice. Lectures review notable illustrators and their work, and the influence of economic and historical milestones from the Golden Age until the present day. Applied projects are based on lecture content and the use mediums, techniques, voice, and storytelling in illustration.


“So, you wanna… go on a date?” by Sasha Lun

Coming up with 100 different things for a date was surprisingly difficult, but I had a lot of fun creating icons in Illustrator in a modern style with a retro theme! If you’re looking for a spontaneous date idea, just close your eyes and see which one you land on!

About the course

DSGN 122 Creative Thinking for Designers focuses on idea generation and big picture thinking, and the themes of "design for good" and "sustainable design". Students work collaboratively with other areas of the University and/or the community to solve problems using creative thinking techniques. Ways in which audiences interact with information are identified and related to visual communication problem solving.
