IDEA School of Design Sponsors FLUI Hackathon 2025

The FLUI Design Hackathon is a Hands-On Experience for Design Students

This year IDEA School of Design is sponsoring the the FLUI (For the Love of User Interface) Design Hackathon from February 16th to 23rd, 2025, and it’s the perfect opportunity for design students interested in UI/UX design to gain hands-on experience and expand their networks.

Students from the IDEA School of Design and other local Universities have organized this year’s event. We are excited to support the students in hosting the event and those that are participating in this year’s Hackathon challenge.

At last year’s event, Nov 2024, Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication students achieved a gold medal for their team project: Team 30 FORM Festival Website Re-design Pitch. Team members included Jason D, Louis Y, Lucy L, Rayna L.

IDEA School of Design takes every opportunity to support and offer funding for students from the Interaction Design diploma and Bachelor of Design to participate in Hackathon and networking events. FLUI is a great opportunity for students to connect with a design community of like-minded peers from local Universities and industry.

If you are interested in starting a career in UX design, UI design or website and app design we recommend you enroll in the Interaction Design diploma. It will support you to develop the skills to compete in events like the FLUI Hackathon. The Interaction Design diploma also teaches students how to design for emerging tech such as AI and VR.

What is the FLUI Hackathon?

This year’s event is taking place Emily Carr University of Art + Design. The FLUI Hackathon is a week-long, no-code UI/UX design competition where students & professionals come together to solve real-world problems.

A design hackathon is a competition where participants work in teams to tackle real-world challenges, creating innovative solutions while collaborating with both fellow students and industry professionals. It’s a high-energy, high-reward experience that challenges teams to think creatively and work efficiently under tight deadlines.

A Legacy Built on Passion for UI/UX Design

The FLUI Hackathon is about more than just competition—it’s an opportunity to grow professionally. In this week-long event, student teams of four will tackle design challenges for local small businesses, allowing participants to gain valuable hands-on experience and build portfolio-worthy projects. You’ll also have the chance to network with industry professionals who will mentor you along the way, providing insights and guidance as you work. Whether you’re aiming to secure an internship, expand your network, or push your creative boundaries, FLUI offers the perfect platform to make it happen.

The FLUI Design Hackathon was founded by fourth-year Interaction Design students at Emily Carr University, inspired by their participation in the Eunoia UX Hackathon at Simon Fraser University. They recognized the value of such events in providing practical experience and networking opportunities, leading them to create a similar platform at their own institution.
