Some great final projects from IDES 142 Survey and Principles of Design II, a study of the global dialogue of design movements

The final project in the First Year Design Survey course is for students to design a shopping bag to represent a country, city or geographical location.

There was some extraordinary work created overall, showcasing both the students' design and illustration skills. Below are a few of the standout projects from Grad 2022 students Alba Palomar-Robisco, Janelle Momotani, Emma Harris, Abigail Aries, Geraldine Yaris, Joyce Chan, John Pachkowsky and Coralie Mayer-Traynor. ‘Bourbon Street’ by Abigail Aries

This shopping bag was inspired by the night life and culture of New Orleans' Bourbon Street. The neon lights, the art, and of course the music!

The Indian government’s recent success in growing and monitoring the country’s wild tiger population is a testament to the power of unity in tackling environmental issues. India is as of recently the only country in the world whose wild tiger population is increasing and edging away from its critically endangered status. This reusable shopping bag is meant to celebrate both their tremendous efforts and the beauty of our planet’s biggest cat.

‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ by Emma Harris

2019 marks 30 years since the Berlin Wall came down. To celebrate the city's unity, I designed a commemorative bag, inspired by the wall's iconic graffiti and John F. Kennedy's famous words "Ich bin ein Berliner" - "I am a Berliner."

‘London, England’ by Janelle Momotani

This shopping bag was designed to represent London, England. I wanted my bag to show  the royalty in the city so I illustrated Queen Elizabeth as the Queen of Hearts playing card on the side and tried to keep the front clean and simple.

‘Die Stadt Essen’ by Jonathan Pachkowsky

I wanted to tackle a city that had undergone some form of transformation for this project, so I decided on the city of Essen in Germany. Previously the booming industrial heart of the Ruhr Valley, the once-titan of industry has reinvented itself as one of Germany's culture hubs, giving me a chance to reference and interpret the city's history and present into a vibrant explosion of texture and colour that can play off those aspects while simultaneously paying respect to the icons of the region's storied past.

‘Jaipur, the Pink City of India’ by Joyce Chan

This shopping bag is designed for Jaipur, the capital city of India's Rajasthan state, that is also known as "The Pink City". The design was inspired by the city's architecture and its coherent colour scheme.

‘Rabat’ by Annika McFarlane

A collectible shopping bag series that uses the form of the bag to depict key tourist attractions for chosen cities. The playful design encourages tourists to regift or reuse the bags while also advertising tourism for each city.

In IDES 142 Survey and Principles of Design II students study the global dialogue of design movements and look at many countries for design inspiration. This is the final big project.
