Congratulations to Sara Nguyen (IDEA Grad 2021) for winning the Applied Arts 2019 Student Award for Editorial Design and 2019 Silver Award – Editorial & Book Design - The Advertising & Design Club of Canada (ADCC) Student Competition with "Type Unwrapped: A Commentary on Candy Bars". Instructor: Heather Jalbout. Course: IDES 247: Survey and Principles of Typography. Check out her multiple award-winning project!

Type Unwrapped is a personal trade book that gives overdue recognition to 10 type designers of the original typefaces that 10 popular commercial candy bars have modified for their brands. Each page pinpoints and examines the typographic differences and similarities of the modified candy bar letters alongside the original typefaces that they are based on for all to understand.

This course provides students with a thorough understanding of typography as a core element of visual communication. The evolution of type from the mid-1400s to the present day is discussed in the context of the technology of the time and its influence on letterforms. Students gain a grounding in the principles of best typographic practice as they apply to print and digital mediums. Instruction in design-related software supports the course.
