Aleks Jones, IDEA School of Design student (Grad 2023), loves photography and recently got into analog photography. He edited the colours of his self-portrait photos (shown above) to resemble the “film look” for IDES 133 - Visual Studio taught by Jay Bassan.

Introducing first year Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication student, Jamie Kusack (IDEA Grad 2023)

For first-year student, Jamie Kusack, life at Capilano University’s IDEA School of Design has really helped her feel invigorated about her work and excited to create more art. She found the oil paint self-portrait assignment (shown above) incredibly daunting but absolutely fell in love with the medium after the first day using it.

Sara Nguyen (IDEA21) wins Applied Arts 2019 Student Award and ADCC 2019 Silver Award for Editorial Design with "Type Unwrapped: A Commentary on Candy Bars"

Congratulations to Sara Nguyen (IDEA Grad 2021) for winning the Applied Arts 2019 Student Award for Editorial Design and 2019 Silver Award – Editorial & Book Design - The Advertising & Design Club of Canada (ADCC) Student Competition with "Type Unwrapped: A Commentary on Candy Bars". Instructor: Heather Jalbout. Course: IDES 247: Survey and Principles of Typography. Check out her multiple award-winning project!

Emma Sato (IDEA22) wins Applied Arts Student Award & Jim Rimmer Scholarship for Boddi.com Trio Advertising Series

Huge congratulations to Emma Sato (IDEA Grad 2022) for winning both the Applied Arts Student Award and the Jim Rimmer Community Scholarship for Design Award with her advertising series Boddi.com. The judges said there were over 40 entries from Vancouver schools, and only two winners, both from IDEA!

No fun in this class (again)—IDEA 3rd Year Studio and Photography Workshop by Rick Etkin

Workshop leader and photographer, Rick Etkin, returned this Fall to work with a motivated and energetic group of the 3rd year students. He gave a basic working and practical overview of lighting and photography techniques for the studio. The course plan offers the basics that a designer could use to light simple products and people for use in their layouts.

First year IDEA student, Joyce Chan, rolls with themes of self care and positivity

First year IDEA School of Design student, Joyce Chan is really grateful to be in such a comprehensive program where she gets to learn about creative thinking, photography and life drawing in her first year. Being a first year student in Capilano University’s Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication is both a reward and a challenge for her.

Joyce has always been interested in photo manipulation shown above in her self portrait inspired by a quote by author Mark Manson. Read her story.

First year IDEA student, Annika McFarlane, reflects on her first term in a 4 year art school degree program

When she got the assignment to do a self-portrait (shown above), Annika McFarlane (IDEA22) created herself out of some of her most iconic pieces of clothing, and surrounded herself with pieces of the places that she often finds herself in. It took her about 5 hours to collect all of the objects, arrange them and shoot the portrait.

In this story, Annika reflects on her first term at IDEA School of Design and shares some of her work. She could not be more stoked to be spending the next 4 years at IDEA. Early applications for Fall 2019 close on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.
