IDEA Grad 2028 Field Trip to Porchlight Press

IDEA Grad 2028 Field Trip to Porchlight Press

As an extra cool add-on to course work covering colour theory, instructor Elyssa Schmid and the Design Fundamentals first-year class took a field trip to Porchlight Press on October 3. Hosts, Michael and press-person, Nolan, who also happens to be a 2021 IDEA grad, gave us a tour of their facility, a talk about colour mixing and a demo of one of the presses. Following that, in a culmination of group excitement, each student was invited to pull their own two colour print from one of the Vandercook proofing presses—a grand time!

This course introduces design as a practice that addresses cultural and social issues by informing, persuading, and enlightening. Students are introduced to the basic visual components that create form and meaning, a variety of methods of visual organization, and appropriate use of colour in communication design. The course also examines the roles of research and theory in design, and how design methodology is based in problem-solving and iteration.
